"Franklin Evans is represented in the show by two videos that reference the homoerotic nature of baseball. His densely layered drawing style is transposed to video through layered images of his own drawings, overlaid with digital markings and musical excerpts that set the amusingly frenetic yet erotic mood."

The professional and artistic caliber of these 15 Fellows is the reason why C.O.L.A. has been nationally recognized as one of the most prestigious municipal arts funding programs in the country. The prints are expected to be published by the Hui Press in November 2008

The gallery will host an opening reception on Saturday, February 2, 5 – 7 pm.

How did it happen? Eight out of eight. All women. Whatever the reasons, the current MFA candidates at Virginia Commonwealth University constitute a welcome inversion of the typically male dominated art and academic worlds. One thing is certain: it was not the result of affirmative action; the strongest applicants just happened to be female. Nor is it all that surprising, considering the proliferation of women artists making some of the best work today. What sets this group apart, especially with the current climate of dog-eat-dog competition, is the manner in which they behave as a unit, an old-school gang, despite their diverse backgrounds and points of view. Amid their individual triumphs and adversities, they embrace each other to move forward collectively, revealing a profound sensitivity to the issues and concerns of the world around them. Each of their contributions stands squarely on its own, but the collective exhibition of their work demonstrates how entire creative communities come into being and flourish: with the right combination of talent and luck. The fact that they are all women merely makes this transformation more vivid.

The only hint of any human is the glimpse of a few fingertips tenderly gripping a fish in the painting “Big ‘Un.” Yet the idea of man is ever-present, both in the subject matter and technique of Some Other Day in the Garden, the new collection of work by San Francisco-based artist Paul Mullins at the Nathan Larramendy Gallery in Ojai. “Sad dog” portraits, fish and opossums flipping off the viewer dot the walls, but the messy rawness of Mullins’ paintings and sketches evoke the tender line masculinity walks between love and viciousness

Franklin Evans will be presenting a large scale installation at El Museo del Barrio. His installation considers the misreading of information, specifically identity, with a literal "whiting-out of part of the piece" as a reference to the whitening of his identity (Franklin Evans vs. Franklin Garcia).

El Museo del Barrio, New York’s premier Latino and Latin American cultural institution, will present its fifth edition of El Museo’s Bienal: The (S) Files from July 25, 2007 through January 6, 2008.
